about
Forming an acronym for the band's name, "Garden of our Neighbor" originated as a pseudonym they used at a warm-up show in August 2021. Kenny Becker shares, "turning it into a song name makes it kinda like our version of 'Black Sabbath' by Black Sabbath, or 'Minor Threat' by Minor Threat, 'Meat Puppets' by Meat Puppets, 'Bad Company' by Bad Company, etc"
There's also a nod to the title of their upcoming LP due later this year hidden in the lyrics.
Kenny shares, "I wrote and recorded this song in one night. I met Andy at our rehearsal spot and recorded him drumming to a loop of chords, we'd do like 5 minutes at a time and he'd riff. Then I edited it down when I got home...I got really excited by the idea of having strong contrast between intimate small vocals and massive synths and drums. Vocally, I was going for a Sparklehorse vibe: up close, super dry, not double-tracked. Not something I’ve really tried much before, but I like how it came out"
lyrics
somewhere in the ocean
far under the seas
one wing on the other
and anchored to me
is a howling wind, smiling
underneath
down down deep
in emmy's bright morning
lie still in the breeze
them angels are blushing
the evening is green
it is at least to me
underneath
way down deep

This reminds me of the Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers, which is where I hope it might lead some yet to experience the free-spirited authenticity of those refugees from the big smoke.
Big Thief sound more contemporary than the loose country-folk of the Creekdippers, but IMO it's Big Thief's countrified tunes that give this album it's cohesion. I hope they do travel further along this road and record America's next great album. They have the talent. tideracer
